On the downside, Lifeline fails to address most of the issues that affect State of Decay. You can also add traps, and call in artillery strikes and drone fly-bys, which can be life-savers. Lifeline adds a number of new features to the base, such as the Ops Center where you can train your troops in new techniques, or the Latrine which helps keep everyone healthy.

Thankfully, you can also upgrade your base and troops to help combat the walking dead. As you progress further in the game, these sieges get tougher, with more waves of zombies and more “special” zombies thrown in the mix. Oh, did I mention the zombies attack you pretty regularly? Every day you’ll have to endure a siege, where hundreds of zombies attempt to overrun your base. That’s right, in addition to the scientists coveted by the military, you’ll also be able to rescue stranded soldiers and civilians, who will join your group and help defend your base from zombie attacks. You also have the option to grab another solider or two to accompany you on your missions, which range from exploration and salvage, to rescuing VIPs or other characters. Even supply drops from command seem to come at slower pace as you progress in Lifeline. Of course these supplies are finite, and you’ll find yourself scavenging for more before too long.

In fact, your supply locker is chock full of every firearm you could possibly want, and plenty of ammo to go along with it. Since you’re in the military, you have access to a lot more weapons and other items. Instead of a random assembly of survivors, you are now part of a military unit, tasked with rescuing scientists who might be able to find a cure for the zombie outbreak. Lifeline also tweaks the playable characters. With fewer hills you’re also less likely to flip your car, although that still happens quite frequently. Getting around is a little easier too, as the playable area is essentially a ring around the inaccessible downtown, with a freeway looping the entire area. While you never go into the city proper – it’s completely overrun – the new urban setting is fresh and exciting. Rather than being set in the country, with only a couple of small towns and a lot of farmland, Lifeline takes place in an overrun city. Each of these has built on the main game, but Lifeline takes this a step further by giving us and entirely new map to play on. Since then, the developer has released two downloadable content add-ons, Breakdown, and the recently released Lifeline. The open world zombie survival game State of Decay was one of my favorites when it was released on PC. Posted In: Game Reviews | Tagged With: Indie
